First Footing and its connection with Shortbread

Hogmanay (New Years’ Eve) is celebrated all over Scotland with music, dancing and merry-making. Once the bells have struck for New Years’ Day, it is still common for Scottish people to “first foot” family, friends & neighbours. First footing involves visiting on foot, and offering a gift to the householder as you step inside. The gift symbolises bringing prosperity, comfort and joy to the household, with shortbread being the traditional choice.

While we can’t promise prosperity, we know for certain that we can bring comfort & joy, so why not keep with tradition this Hogmanay and enjoy some of our delicious shortbread? It will certainly make for the best start to 2015!
